Rome Bans 'cruel' Goldfish Bowls

That's great news! If only it would cover the entire country.

That dog walking law in turin looked a bit weird though, how do they enforce that?!

There is no way they can enforce a "dog walking" law...

As for the goldfish bowl law, hurrah! I just hope that other european cities follow suit, and soon it will be frowned apon to use goldfish bowls by everyone, not just dedicated aquarists like us..

I just came on to post the same article! A little late I guess.

It's a start anyhow, hopefully other countrys will follow.

Fabulous aboute banning goldfish bowls... Hopefully people all over the world will follow suit.

The large amount of water in the bowl and small surface water to enter mean a majour shortage of oxygen... Unless you chuck in an airpump or goldfishbowl filter of course.

That is good news but I agree about the dog walking law. Dogs need exercise but I don't think they need to be walked 3 times a day. I doubt many people have time to walk a day that much. One good walk a day should be fine.

Good about the goldfish bowl, but I would owe a lot of money in Italy for not walking my dog 3x a day. In the Spring, Summer, and Fall, my pom gets two mile walks everyday, but I've been ill and Winter's coming, so I'm not walking CiCi as regularly. When I get to FL, she'll be walked a lot more often. We play inside though for about an hour, so she gets exercise. In addition, she's pad trained, so she doesn't need to go outside to do her business. It's like litter box training with cats, but with pads, and costs the same or a little less than litter for a cat. I wouldn't do it for a larger dog, but she's only 6 pounds (her poop is soooo small) and it can get to 25 below 0 up in IL. I don't think she'd like going out to pee in that weather! I know I wouldn't! But I guess the weather's not so bad in Italy, and I understand that it would prevent dogs from being left for hours on end with no where to go. So it is rather humane in a sense, but I also wonder how they would enforce it?

Am very glad there is new laws about keeping animals! Fab news. I was thinking, is there any other laws considering fish health in tanks?? As I have mentioned before on this board, I hate to see the eels suffering in an aquarium of a Chinese Restaurant near my work. The eels ar full of bloody red bites and white fungus and are gasping for air. The ones I saw 2 days ago, are gone now-I quess they died. But there will be more eels in a few days or weks am sure. These eels are for food. Is this legal to keep them like that?

Here in Finland fishbowls are banned too. And it's recommended that under 40 litres tanks are not used at all.

Thats intresting. I wonder what they keep bettas in?

We keep bettas with other fishes in big tanks. I can't see any reason why betta should be kept in a bowl. Of course one can't put betta with any fish but why not for example with cardinal tetras and kuhlie loaches...

I doubt it because it has a filteration system... The reason bowls would be banned (I imagine) is due to lack of oxygen & care with water quality... You introduce a filter and both of those are taken care of.

As for the dog walking thing... I'm sure there would be some leniancy on it... Some people keep their dogs tied up all day or never let them out for excersize - only to go to toilet... I think the law would be aimed at those people. Lots of people have big gardens and let their dogs spend plenty of time out in them... For these people I think they'd say 1 walk is enough... But then again I'm not the law.

Kind a lame since you can pick up those small bowls at crafts store or those brandy snifters. I wonder if P.E.T.A.'s going to have a "goon squad" to do random bowl check? I think eduacting the shopper's the way to go instead of bans. God for bid if they ban burger joints for serving greasy burgers.
