Rocks&stones?

is it safe to put rocks and large stone in my tank,that i didnt get from the fish shop i goto?
as me mum has got some very nice ones she said i can have?

Boil them over the stove in some water best way to see and put vinger on rock if fizzez up dont put in aquarium
