Hi Guys,

Id like to make a nice big rock cave or feature but am concerned about the glass base getting a knock from a rock as the substrate is sand and am sure the rocks will sink in it....

Ive looked on the net and found an american bloke saying he used ' egg crate from his local DIY store ' under the substrate to help..I dont think he means like egg boxes we buy eggs in does he??

I looked in B&Q online for some plastic grid in sheets or something to lay under my substrate as a rock support but cant seem to see anything or maybe I cant find anything because Im searching for the wrong things??

Anyways what do you guys use under rocks and where do you get it in the UK.

Thanks again

why not try coating the base with silicone? Use a notched trowel, or something similar, and lay a bead around the edges, or even the whole base if you wanted to. Then flip the thing over onto a sheet of waxpaper, press until you have it as a thin layer and wait for it to dry!

The egg crate is similar to plastic milk crates or bread trays, (the things that a bakery uses to hold 30 loaves of bread when they deliver them to shops). You can also use the plastic grid stuff they use in ceilings under skylights.
