Good morning!
I'm running 2 external filters on my Fluval Roma 240litre: the one that came with the aquarium (Fluval 305 - been gradually replacing the media maintaining the original combination) and recently added an Eheim Eccopro 2036.

The Eheim has 3 layers of filter media. As I gradually replace them, should I maintain the original choice of media types & their position in the filter, or try something different? It's a broad question, I know, but I can't find any guidance on the Eheim website. Is there any consensus as to the "ideal" filter medium combination?

The aquarium is fairly heavily planted and stocked.

Bio-balls - Sponge - Filter floss ?That's what I'd probably go for, not personally tried it, but it's on a few setups at work. Seems effective enough.

Many thanks for the suggestion! From the small number of responses, I'm assuming there's no hard-and-fast rule.

But are there any definite no-no's in the choice/combo/position of filter media?

bottom basket pre {filter carbon}
mid basket{ peat granuls }
upper level {bio max }

i of many ways.i run the 405s with no issues .

Shouldn't you put the peat granuls after the biomax?
Peat contains a lot of stuff potentially detrimental to your bacteria. I suppose this setup works, since you use it succesfully obviously,
but I think you could increase your biological filtration if you switch the baskets...

I always run my filters like this:
loose filter floss (large particles)
any addittional stuff you want (carbon, nitrax spunges, etc)
coarse spunge
biofiltration material( bioballs or pipes or sintered glass balls, etc)
Fine spunge

what media do you have currently? if its the eheim stuff you dont need to replace it. only the white pad. personally i would stick to the standard eheim stuff i run it in all my filters and the water is always crystal clear.

OK let's go for it. What you want is simple, and will work in any filter. You start out the filter flow path with any media that will prevent excessive build up of solids in later stages. For me that means a sponge filter or maybe those "noodles" that are sold by Eheim called Effi-mech or something like that. Next up, and the main part of my filter, are biological filter media, whether it be ceramic media, bioballs or even pot scrubbers like these.

Finally, right before the water returns to the tank, use some filter floss to polish your water before it returns to be viewed by everyone. After all you want the tank water to look great.

Anything else reflects personal preference in the particular media, not its functions. I like sponges as my first stage and even use a coarse sponge followed by a bit finer sponge. Other people will use the Effi-mech instead. That is fine. They are doing what is needed and keeping solids out of their biological filters. If you keep functions in mind, you won't stray far from an ideal situation. Coarse filtration / biological filtration / final polishing will always work out just fine in practice.

I agree,

Oldman47 is right on the money here...
I do the same thing! (and everyone should more or less)
