Finally found ammonia without color or fragrance..however the ingredients say it has a surfacant in it. It doesnt bubble when shaken tho. Is this safe to use for cycling? I dont know what a surfacant is LOL

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but surfactants are a no no.

Are you in the UK, if so, you will get a bottle of 'Household Ammonia' from Homebase for around £2, which is ideal for the job.

Cheers :good:

BTT

I use Enzo household amonia, about £1 from a cheap home hardware store in the uk.

yes, bad! Surfactants are ingredients of detergents and soaps. Its a term coined in the 50's for Surface Acting Agent. They reduce the surface tension between water and oils.

If you do searches here, there should be loads of threads with UKers giving advice to each other for shops and ammonia products - I've seen lots of them.

thanks! Glad I asked since I had a bad feeling about it. Im not in the UK..Im in the US. I've checked 4 different stores and this was the only clear ammonia I could find...everyone else had lemon ammonia which I knew wasn't right. I guess I'll be calling all the hardware stores in town trying to find the right one as the water in the tank slowly evaporates away UGH

where in us? I'm in NC as you can see in my profile and I walked into my usual grocery store (Harris Teeter chain) and found what I've taken to be the right thing on first try!

Im in PA and I cannot find pure ammonia ANYWHERE! I've been to Kmart, walmart, 3 different grocery stores...heck even tried big lots! Tonight I DID find one that was again clear, and it said no phosphorus..but it had no ingredient list so I didnt know if it had surfactants in it like the other did..so didn't buy it. Im getting frustrated!

Out of desperation I DID stop at the pet store and got a container of their water and some rocks. I tested it and it has NO ammonia in it but Im not sure if I trust it ..

Hi, its waterdrop in NC again,

Actually, "no ingredient list" may be good! Thats what mine was like. A clear plastic bottle, no ingredient list. When shaken it did not foam - only gave plain bubbles. It was only a buck or less so I bought it. At home I opened it and it had no perfumes and so I decided it must be the right thing.

In hindsight its been fine.

In the US you can get ammonia at Ace hardware. It is with cleaning products but its only a dollar or two per gallon and is labelled as "clear ammonia".
