had a thought while i was placing some apple snails in with some shell dwellers today, are any of the rift lake snails available in the trade? we can get the shells so why not the snails? neothauma from tangayika have the most beautiful shells and i would far prefere some of them to apple snails!

i know one of the malawi snails gets to a fair old size big enough in fact that i doubt mbuna could bother it!

ust wondered if anyone knew anything about where i could pick any of the rift lake snails up? :good:

On the whole cichlids dont tollerate snails well. They attack them and end up causing tremendous stress to the snails not to mention eating off their antenae!!

and if you have a sand substrate, sand is like us walking on shards of glass to a snail's foot so please dont put them on sand or w/ cichlids.

ok perhaps i should of been a bit more clear, i was adding MORE apple snails to my Lamprologus Signatus tank, there was already 5 snails in there which were sent to me by a friend when they were about 5mm across they are now all over an inch across and i have only had them for a month.

they were bred in a tank that had sand as a substrate and now are in a tank with aragonite sand as a substrate and they are thriving like i could never have hoped for. there antenae and foot are all in tact as signatus are one of the least aggressive african cichlids i have ever come across. :good:

and besides all that what you have stated is not what i asked. i have snails with most of my shell dwellers and they all do fine in the high ph. the only cichlid i had a problem with was occelatus and the snails were quickly moved. :p

I just assumed if you cared about your fish you'd care about your snails too. Sorry, my mistake.

Shell dwellers tolerate snails fairly well, they normally just move small snails away, not attack them.

I keep my snails on sand with no problems, if it was that bad I'm sure there would be some damage or they wouldn't move etc. Play sand like many people use in their tanks isn't sharp, sharp sand like what's used in cement on the other hand. Also fish like Satanoperca and Geophagus would not sift through sand if it was so sharp.

Does this not show care then, he removed the snails as there was a problem, didn't just leave them there.
