I had always thought my female betta was a crowntail, but after reading I was surprised to find out she actually is a combtail. All crowntails originated from the combtail, so combtails now are not accepted anymore in judging, they are like comparing cord phones to cordless phones now.
So someone out there either did not breed very good crowntails, or they are trying to keep the near forgotten combtail type alive.

It's true that combtails were the start of crowntails because the web reduction in the fins was needed to produce the 50% web reduction of the crowntail, but now-a-days combtails are just crowntail mixes. For examples, halfsuns are combtails; crowntails crossed with halfmoons.
