Rescue Bettas

I got these guys at my local as a group of females, I of course knew different so picked out 5 possible males. Have had them 5 days now and am happy to say I can see a difference in them already *they were all housed together among others!*


Grizzle 1 ~ This 1 i am unsure of the sex, small Ventrals but long fins

Cambodian ~ Male, this chap had hardly any damage which I am very shocked about, 100% male as he nested & is always flaring @ Grizzle 2

Butterfly ~ Male as you can see a lot of damage.

Please take note that they ALL have egg spots! 3 are 100% males!

Will hopefully get them adopted out once fully healed

They look lovely - well done for rescuing them! I especially like the 3rd one, the 'unharmed' cambodian. Where do you get all these fish from and where do you keep them all (even if you are rehoming them)?

I got these from my local, they all came in as females amazingly from Thailand of all places! I thought there were Betta Masters lol

These are currently in 1 gal mini tanks to allow me to give them there daily water changes, in another week or so they will move into a divided 2ft until adopted out

Well done for rescuing them, I see many so called females together when some are obviously males, you'd think Lfs would know better.
Hope they all go to good homes

thing is VT females have very long fins, so its easily done plus these are obviously still very young hence the egg spot on males still

Good for you I'm glad there are others who can help these poor fish who are treated by some people so poorly. I currently have 4 betta's that were laying on their sides in an Asian market with ripped fins and bloated. I thought they might die, but after a week they are gorgeous and are soon up for adoption. I don't like to buy any from markets and such as it gives them money to do it again, however when they are obviously dying, I can't help it. What do you do?

My local PaH had loads of female bettas in today I was surprised because I'd never seen them in any of my LFS before. I then went into my local Dobbies and they had a lovely male in there but he was stressed to the max, REALLY visible stripes. It looked like the rummynose tetras he was in with were chasing him. Since my LFS don't often have bettas in - I felt for the first time today what you guys do when you have to peel yourself away from the tank and not take them home.

i know my local very well and often if theres a male been there over a week that is very nipped they'll ask if i want him *free!* as they wouldn't sell him anyway

aafter rescuing a betta and if successful will damage done to the bettas fins like some of thes,e will it eventually get repaired or is it permenantly scarred ?

It's actually amazing how quickly they heal when given nice clean water and the right environment!

In most cases it fully heals, there is a slight imperfection where the regrowth happens but its usually not noticeable, i have no doubt these will be near fully if not fully healed in a few weeks time

alright cuz my girlfriend has two bettas and her family takes horrible care of them and her mother wanted to know if i wanted to take them and i just wanted to make sure i wasnt wasting my time for an ugly fish even though it would be worse for them to just die

I am going to run contrary to the sentiments expressed here so please give me a bit of room. In my opinion there is no such thing as a rescue betta, even though you have all given personal accounts to the contrary. A "rescue betta" is really a betta that has no reason to exist at your LFS. Why would I say such a nasty thing? Well here I go being contrary. In my opinion, purchasing a Betta splendens that is not in demand for its own qualities is encouraging breeders to keep producing and dumping sub-standard fish on the market. These fish would never be sold unless someone took pity on them, which means that they are substandard almost by definition. I am not opposed to buying a fish that appeals to me, in fact I have one such right now in my tanks, but buying a fish simply because I feel sorry for him means that I am involved in the commerce of buying substandard fish from people who produce such things. I would much rather that those people go out of business, even go bankrupt, even if it means a fish must sit on a shelf for an extra month. Puppy mills are the classic example. A puppy mill churns out substandard puppies because people find puppies as a group irresistible but the puppies that they obtain have no business existing. Until we shut down the puppy mill equivalent in the betta trade, we will continue to find lots of "rescue bettas" on a pet shop shelf. Leave them there to help preserve proper standards in the fish at the LFS.

Fully agree with you there Oldman, I usually end up with mine for free as I know the owners well and they always offer them to me rather than letting 'them rot and die' so to speak, none of there other customers want a betta with no fins as there 'not as pretty'
