The bipolar state. Take a stab at it.
I'm the kind of person who can't stand no change at all. So, this weekend, I'm "completely" (at the same time, not completely) rescaping my betta fish, and also making future plans for tanks. This is the first time I'm gonna actually HAVE to take them out, so I need to make sure I don't...screw up.

I need to add more plants. It's more abundant on the bottom, but none of them are too tall. I'm going to Petco to buy FOUR silk plants, around 4.99 each. I've yet to choose exactly which ones, but they have a large variety, so I'll pick on on the spot.

What I'm worried about is the gravel. The gravel bed is too low! So I'm getting 2lbs of gravel (white). I'm gonna wash it about three times. Should I do more? I won't do less though, lol.

For the water, I'm gonna take about 95% water out, leaving enough water for the gravel, because I don't want to risk losing any bacteria. Everything (plants, heater, filter) will also be in water-filled containers holding the old water as well. I'm paranoid, lol.

Once I put the new gravel in, should I have it sit for a whole day, or half a day? To make sure nothing goes wrong with them? Because as I do this, the bettas will be in their old 1/2 gallons in the meanwhile, meaning no heater, no nothing. And even if it's Texas, it does get chilly in the winter! Lol. I'd prefer not to leave them overnight in the cold. Turning up heat is NOT. an option.

I'm gonna be running a risk with a minicycle. I'm probably gonna mess with the gravel a lot, so hopefully it doesn't end up too bad.

Anything I missed?

And I'd like opinions on this idea. I plan on ONLY having 1 betta per 5gallon tank in the future. But, I want to be CREATIVE! It'll be a great summer project for me. Best thing, I won't spend much money on it.

Here is the tank I will be using:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Aquarium-Starter-Kit-5-Gallons-Fish-Aquatic-Pets/12177653
In Inches: it is
16.2''L, 8.4''W, 10''H
(It says 13.6'' as the height, but that's including the hood).

Now, my idea is this. I'm planning on adding on adding the previous 1/2 gallon tank INTO the 5gallon tank.
http://www.petco.com/product/106657/Hagen-Zen-Marina-Betta-Kit.aspx
5.5" L X 5.5" W X 5.5" H

It first perfectly. Now, hopefully this isn't too confusing. Inside the 1/2 gallon, I will be planning on adding a cave (that I will buy later, currently undecided). Probably one from Petsmart or Petco. Definitely small enough to fit inside, but big enough for my darling betta. I will add glass marbles as the substrate for inside the 1/2gal. It'll be clear, translucent white, and orange to go with the outside white gravel. (I'll be adding regular gravel substrate outside the 1/2gallon). Along with the marble and cave, I want to add a plant, either a tall or small (silk, of course).

Outside of the 1/2 gallon will be, well, everything else. I will surround the 1/2gal with plants, and also scatter others. Heater and filter will have no changes.

Does that sound like a good idea? There will be space for him to swim of course, but it's also detable about the space the 1/2gallon takes up. But I like creativity, so the 1/2 gal wil be an actual home, and the 5gal his yard!

Sound okay to you guys? Btw, the gravel will be white. I'm a sucker for white gravel.

:good:

sounds alright
the gravel should be 5cm deep at min
i would leave it for a day not half a day
you should get a vallisneria and a cabomba and a bacopa would look great in the tank

Yeah, it's barely 3cm. I realize it's too low, and just finally I'm getting around to fixing that problem (oops...). Alright. How do you think the betta will do overnight? There is no "warmest room in the house", only a coldest room. How could I keep them warm?

Oh, and I forgot. Does anybody have ideas for a betta making a bubble nest? For example, in breeding, I've seen often that they put half a styrofoam cup and float it, and the betta makes his nest there. My top water level has too much disturbance to it, so they normally don't make any. Does anybody have any good ideas, that won't look like a nuisance in the tank? Preferably plastic?

Ooh! Here's a good current-killing method. If you use a good straight water bottle and you cut it well, it won't look like a nuisance at all.

Lol, it's not the current that's the problem. The current is absolutely fine, very soft. It's just top-water disturbance. Am I saying that right? Like, it just moves the very top later of water a lot. And betta's wouldn't like that if they want a bubble nest, 'cause it would get destroyed. :(

Can you put the bettas in containers that can float inside the tank? Then you can let the gravel settle and keep them separate but the tank water will still keep their containers warm. I'm not sure if you really need to let the gravel sit though, but I wouldn't leave the bettas cold all night, it might stress them out

Yeah Mauricia, that's a big issue with this. I don't have anything like that, so that's not really a choice. I'm probably gonna finish this sometime in the afternoon, depending when I leave.

Hm. Yes, I understand the top-water disturbance, but doesn't strong outflow of filter = larger disturbance of top layer of water? The plastic covering the outflow will take away the strong outflow, decreasing the disturbance because the disturbance is caused by the outflow? If not, what is causing the water disturbace? Lol, I must not be reading correctly or something. Anyway, I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

The water flow slow, but UNEVEN, which is what's causing the disturbance. It's pretty high up, so it falls a little bit more harshly than smoothly, causing it to be more uneven (and causing more disturbance), but still weak. Lol, does that make more sense?

Went shopping today! Spent about $25 on everything.

4 Petco plants (I'll get links later), FINALLY Hikari BioGold pellets, and more gravel. Only 2lbs, though.
Omg that's a really cool idea about the half gallon inside the 5 gallon!!!!!!
And lucky me, I have an almost half gallon, empty, and a cave, and extra gravel! :hyper:
I'm going to go do this RIGHT NOW and will tell ya how it works!
:fun:

Booooo, you're gonna beat me. Lol! Try that, I really wanna see how that works. Hopefully the hole will still be big enough for him to get in and out, with a plant there also. Pictures, I'm really curious if it'll be successful!
