I have a lower water line in most of my tanks. Mainly to get the spray bar above the water line in Juwel tanks you have no choice but to drop the water level, its got #28### all to do with caring for the tank!

i will have you know my fish are kept in tip top condition never had an outbreak of any disease! the glass is cleaned once a week - every week. i live in a hard water area so i can clean it now and by the morning there will be water marks.

sorry to get so defensive but my tank does not look neglected.

You asked for honest opinions.. I gave you one

Tanks with visable water-lines and water marks are more often associated with poorly maintained tanks from my personal experience. I was not implying that you tank IS neglected, merely that it LOOKS like a neglected tank. It really detracts from the looks of any tank (except perhaps an open topped, or riparium setup).

ok, i can understand what you are saying but i feel there was no need to use the word neglected. im planning on using a 4ft tank for a pludarium with a 2ft tank below for a waterfall / sump filter.....gonna have plenty of water marks

as stated i cant really have anymore plants, my talking cat plays with them, by playing i mean destroys.

why don't you fill the tank to the top-line, to get rid of the water-marked section.. It looks odd with that gap?

because to get my corys to spawn ( works every time )i replicate what happens in the wild, hence the low water line. it will be dropped a further 4 inches before its gradually raised again.....correct foods added and desired temp reached.........oh look, 300+ eggs.

I will have to try that on my tank to try & make all my cories spawn at the same time

thanks! that was the overall idea as i have 18 corys ( 13 1 1/2 inch juvi's that i bred ) 2 clown plecs,a bn, and frank, the talking cat, so all bottom feeders. i think i could have a pair of 4-5'' mid to top feeders too that would feel right at home.

How about some floating plants? or would the cat go for them. I am toying with the idea for my neglected tanks with a lower water level ( ) some of the stick on plants you get for vivariums to sort of look like they are growing above the waterline. Couldnt do it with the turtles though they would eat the plants plastic or real.

there is a little more involved in the whole procedure....

i try and replicate the corys natural enviroment - shallow water = no food for fry....deeper cooler water = flash floods....floods bring food for the fry, time to get busy! lol

before i try and spawn i DO NOT feed micro bloodworm and i go easy on normal feeds.

to get them to spawn i usually drop the water level over the course of a week to about 2/3rd's....i then leave it at that level for 2 days then do a water change, filling the tank back up to the top,( so basically a 50% water change ) i use slightly cooler water which in turn drops the temp from 79f to around 75f-76f =1 degree centigrade drop( ish )

once the water change and top up is complete i feed a cube of micro blood worms, sinking pellet and some algae wafers. obviously don't go mad with the feeding but i put enough in so that they go nuts, not knowing what to e fist.lol i think on average i put 1 bloodworm cube,6 mini algae wafers, a around 8 sinking pellets.thnat night i feed some more sinking pellets and some tetra-min crisps ( like hard flakes. )

by the morning they will have spawned and eggs would be all over the place.....

this works for me but i cannot guarantee your corys will act the same way during the same changes.

i have some of them silk 'vivarium' plants suckered on the top of my tank,the gourami's love hiding in them and the tri corys hide their eggs up there

the plants i have need all the light they can get, if i put floaters in it may block out much needed light, i do however have a plan. im going to buy some more bogwood with the credit notes given to me by my lfs for my cory juvi's and im going to drop the water level by another 4 - 6 inches. the pile of wood on the left veiwing point thingy the pro's in the planted section take advantage of so well, will be stacked up out of the water creating a kind of island. i plan on strapping down mosses to the wood and getting some semi aquatic plants to emerge from the wood, through the water.

the only problem i see is the talking cat not having enough space to swim around. i wont cut off the front of the tank ie: front to back.

I have the silk plants in the top front 2 corners of the tank,they take out a bit of light,which is what i wanted for the corys,but theres still plenty of centre light for them here's a few rough pics.
