Hi, Whats the best way to go about reporting a fish shop?

I need to speak to someone about a shop in my town and the way the fish are being treated there.

Ill try the RSPCA first and see what advice they give.

Ive been concerned about the shop before but was disgusted today. all the tanks are way too small for the fish and the tanks are in bad condition, topped it off when I was an Adult oscar in a tank that he couldnt even turn around in with another fish in the tank that was really in a bad way (bad rash over nearly half of its side)

When I rang the RSPCA about a kitten I saw poorly looked after in a local pet shop, they told me I had to contact the council as they are the ones who provide the stores' license. The RSPCA can't help you here, harass the council

The council give out the licence so complain to them. Quote from the above legislation to support specific claims.

Most tanks in LFS's are too small for the number of fish they hold as it's really only meant to be a temporary thing, but that does sound exceptionally bad.

Actually, the council would be the best bet, but calling would be better and ask to be put through to the relevant pet shop licensing inspector, give him your info, get a name and phone number and address to put your complaint into writing.

If its a large chain then complaining to the council will be pointless, it will be the companies HQ you want to write to.

ive had much the same when ever i have rang them there so busy they seem to choose what they take on

As much as i dislike the RSPCA and have seen them mess up so many times its amazing, i'd have to say its not their jobs to sort out every single petshop, there is relevant licensing and inspectors just for that purpous.

Its no good slating the RSPCA for not doing someone elses job! (especially when they struggle to do their own )

If you dont get really stroppy, you can always ask/look at the pet shops pet shop license! They have to have it displayed by law and its signed by the local inspector! Take th inspectors name and call the council asking for this person by name, saying h works as a petshop inspector...

Its a bit roundabout but its complicated and tbh its a good thing, some people complain about the most stupid things that would be wasting a lot of peoples time if they didnt at least make it so you had to WANT to find the correct person to speak to.

God knows i bet there are a million and one customers sending formal complaints about me every time i refuse a fish sale because the water is poor, i think they are lying, the tank/compatability etc is unsuitable...
