my old filter on my tank was literally old; it was an OLD model AquaClear Mini (not quite as mini as they are now!) and has taken a beating over it's lifetime. so, i retired him and replaced him with a new model AquaClear Mini.

the few slots on the intake are much bigger than on the old filter, so i was wondering; since fry will obviously be sucked up, should i check the water space over the motor, or under the media, to find any lost fry?

lol you have asked the right question~

the answer is yes. i have the new version of AC mini filter, it sure "sucks" up every thing including 2 months old fry! (this sux) i even turn to it's lowest output butstill fry still got suck in..... if you have fry inyour tank it will be good you check it before you sleep every night.... use a flash light to see more clearly. for most fry that got sucked up, they will be stored under the filter foam. BUT if you cannot find it on time your fry will stuck between the foam and the filter wall and die...

the new ones are very poweful... i lready lost 2 2 months fry with it..... :/

They sell filter caps at some lfs
The caps are less than a buck and they prevent fry from getting sucked

I am pretty sure there is one for the mini
