After my recent find of new bogwood for my tank I've now installed it, (journal to follow George ;) ) however it looks a little TOO much like the amazon now, i.e it's as brown as dishwater with the leaked tanins from the wood. I've put some activated carbon in the filter to try and clear it, the tank is 200L, do you guys have any idea how long it will take?

The tank and wood now....

Sorry mate, no idea personally. I've never had a problem with tannins.

Water changes may speed up the process though.

Seeing the photo it doesn't look that bad, I've seen a lot worse on here. Looking fantasic already actually!

I eagerly await your journal!

It does'nt look to bad in the photo, but maybe you have just done a water change, i had this problem before and i ended up taking the wood back out of the tank and boiling it, lots of water changes did'nt help much, boiling it and letting it simmer for a couple of hours works real good, i would probably go to that hassle rather than look at a tannin coloured tank for a couple of months.

I must be the odd one out here, i like the look of the tannins in a tank. Looks more natural to me.
I even add black water extract to all my tanks as my wood is pretty washed out now.

I'm with you Ryo. I like a SLIGHT amount of tannins in the water. Not overly so though.

OWW: I put a huge piece of wood in my tank and it leaked for a while. It was too big to boil, and I didn't wanna get yelled at for soaking it in the bathtub so I just threw it in the tank. It took probably about 4-6 weeks for the water to become tolerable. Hard to tell though because I went through a bout of GW toward the end of the cycle of the wood. Anyway... good luck

...and your tank is looking suspiciously like it's a fantastic job.

Hey!

I love the tannins in my tank, and just like RYO, I add even more blackwater extract to mine! I have a huge bag of carbon somewhere in my shed, its about 25kg. I think I have used about a kilo of it in two years! Best of luck with the removal of the brown stuff, it could take weeks however!
