hi all,
i have quiet a few big tanks in my fishroom & use quite a bit of water doing water changes, i usualy store my water for changes in a 50 gal tank for 36 hrs or so to get rid of the chorides etc & also to let the temp to adjust.no sooner than the water is ready than i use it & then refill the tank so you can see i am using around 150 gal a week. The problem is that the nitrates out of the tap are in the range of 30-40 ppm so i was wondering if anyone have any ideas on how i could reduce these ,the method would have to be fairly speedy.i have look at using a nitragon cartrige but it looks as though i would be forever regenerating it,ro water seems a bit extreame & exspensive with re-adding the trace elements etc.

cheers fronty

My advice is to leave it like that. Many keepers on here have tap water in that range, including CFC who keeps more sensitive fish such as stingrays.

So long as your tank nitrates are under 100 there really isn't any reason to worry.

As Andy suggested just leave it be. If you are trying to breed wild caught fishes then use a granule nitrate remover. You could have lots of floating plants in the water holding tanks and they would use some of the nitrates. However, they would need light to grow.
