just returned from lfs with what was described as a "red striped tiger platy". its white almost see through with clear fins a red belly and red stripes running down the side. looks very nice and never seen one before so i bought him home! they only had 1 left so couldnt get any more. is this the correct name for these fish? will try and get a pic and post it on here :good:

i also have a platy in my tank that is red and blue with speckles, is this a mix of 2 types or does it have an identity....?

It sounds like a good looking platy. They are constantly developing new patterns for platies so whoever develops it is free to name i whatever they want. The red and blue mix of colors sounds a lot like one of the platy patterns they had over 20 years ago. I have no idea where the color combination came from.

get the lfs to order in some more for you, then you have a potential best selling platy on here if they breed :shifty: I can't see from the pictures but if its a female and been raised in a tank/vat of that pattern platy then it will be pre hit and give birth to fry of the same colour :good: if you ever get some fry from it I would defo breed them and supply my lfs with them [they in in cash :#105###y:]

ill get in touch with them and see if they can get anymore. its a male so i could do with some females and if they breed ill let you know. they said they got half a dozen in and i had the last one.... it was in a mixed platy tank so if there were any females then the fry could be anything!
if it breeds with one of my other platys will all the fry be mixed or do you get some of both, or is it pot luck? ive never bred fish yet so would like to know......

example;

if a black fish breeds with a white fish the following occur;

about 25% black
about 25% white
about 50% black and white

however, sometimes the results are 33% of each. :D

Nice fish. My lfs has been getting a lot of those in as well as "koi" platys and swords. Some of the tiger platies are yellow with black patches and stripes.

It is so crazy why this platy xiphophors maculatus has been giving so many stupid names.
it is a form of the bleeding heart platy which was developed over 60 years ago

it was named the bleeding heart because the colour pattern looks like blood flowing from a wound.
