We have three red tail sharks in our 55 tank. This morning I saw him sitting near the top of tank, near the heater still breathing, gills going. I wiggled the heater he started swimming. I fed the tank, he starts swimming. So I went upstairs got dressed. By the time I got back downstairs he was right back in the same spot.

Saturday I did do a 25% water change, cleaned gravel, used the kit that comes with stress coat, and other stuff. I also know they ( the sharks) tend to lay still. But it is often to bottom of tank. No white spots, breathing looks good. Fins are in tack.

Now there are three of them this one has always been the "third wheel".

Any advice

I'm sorry to say that your tank is far too small to have three red tailed sharks in it.  He's probably stressed.  You can reasonably accommodate no more than one.

Can I ask how big they are currently?  They will all grow to 5-6" and need lots of room to swim and their own territory.  Is the tank heavily planted?  Lots of bogwood etc to break up sight lines?

I would suggest relocating two of them if possible.  Failing that for the time being, leave the lights off to try to reduce any stress.

Just posting to say I agree with Far_King.

Red tails will tolerate each other when young but, as they reach sexual maturity, they become more and more aggressive to their own kind. I'm afraid, if you don't separate them, the most dominant fish will harass the other two to death.

even for a 55Gal tank, one red tail is enough. They are cool little fish to look at, but with their temperament, one is all you need, you can sub the others for some Gouramis, or some other sedate fish, as for mine when i had them, they were always sedate swimmers, not sure if it was due to stress since i placed them with my cories and he seemed to love hanging around them. As for the size, i would assume its 3 - 4 1/2 inches in length atm, am i correct?
