hi all. i have just introduced 2 baby red spotted severums into my tank today and my 6 month old gold severum seems to chase them all the time. will this eventually settle down or would it be best to pass him on to someone else. not seen him do this before. they do seem to find a place to hide but when they eventura out he chases them again. my fully grow red spotted wild green severum does not bother. please get back to me asap.

This is normal behaviour from an established severum, he is trying to prove his dominance and it will continue until he either decides they know whos boss or until he stresses them to death.

I had this from my red spotted sev when I introduced two younger sevs to my tank, it did settle down after a tank rearange and introduction of a fish larger than the red spot, but he caused the two younger sev some damage before it stopped. Now he takes no notice of them whatsoever, actually he acts peacemaker between the two of them when they chase each other

How big is the tank, is it planted are there plenty of hiding places? What other fish are in the tank?

tank has loads of hiding places. its a 70g tank. might try and re arange it tomorrow. tank has a couplr of parrot fish in and a couple of silver sharks and a pair of jack dempseys

Woah ok, that tank is in no way big enough for all those fish, one severum on its own needs 70g, with all those fish you need at least 160g.

Im going to assume these are all relative small still and you plan to upgrade in the near future?

my 2 baby red spotted sev"s are still hiding from my gold sev so will give it another 24 hours and still no change then i will have to get rid of my gold sev i think. bugger.

If the tank is only 70g and you are not upgrading to a larger tank soon, you need to re-home a lot more than just a gold sev. Please consider the needs and health of the fish.

i have put my gold sev in my spare 100l tank for the time being. he is only 4 inches in size and low and behold to two babies are out and about in the main tank. it does concorn me a little that people always say your over stocked. well the fish are not full size yet. apart from my green sev and pair of jack dempseys they are. i got several friends that work in lfs and 1 of them is abit of a expert in keeping fish and also went to uni to study them and he has even told me i am not overstocked so until he tells me sorry people but i would prefer to listen to him. he is the one who keeps, works and has degrees in fish.

In that case you have no need of my advice again, or anyone else here, just ask your expert friend

I would like to say a lot more, however, I would get a lifelong ban if I did :<

I think your friend should ask for a refund from his school.

what a complete waste of time. why ask our advice only to say your mate who clearly knows nothing about sa cichlids knows better and youre going to follow his poor advice anyway. minxy myself and many others on here are experienced severum keepers . take that poor gold out of the tiny tank re-home all but 1 sev then you will be ok,

a couple of parrot fish
a couple of silver sharks
a pair of jack dempseys

Plus 2 Sevs ? Oh dear are you in for trouble. Please listen to us here. It may seem fine and dandy now but they will all get to be HUGE. 2 Sevs, not counting the rest of the fish "may" work. I have a Rotkiel and a Green in my 75 gallon. All was fine until now that my Green is wanting to mate (no females in there). He is getting very aggressive. I am currently looking for another tank to move him to before he gets bigger and bullies my Red. When you bring these fish home they become your responsibility. Please consider getting more big tanks in the near future or be ready to rehome some of them. Sorry.......It simply isn't going to work.

i will be looking at getting a 120g tank soon. but wedding duties call first. i was going to up grade within a few months, the thing i dont like is not saying all people, but some people are dam right rude. many thx for responses the people who were not rude. i understand i will need a bigger tank but all fish are still on babys at the minute beside my red spotted wild severum and jd"s.

thx

I originally in answering your post, was not rude, in fact was trying to be helpful, however, your following posts, were actually ignorant and arrogant, which therefore implied that I didnt know what I was talking about, which to me is being rude, as believe me, I know what Im doing! My post in return was very restrained on my part, but when it comes to the welfare of large fish who are clearly not being looked after properly, then my patience is tested and answers will become very short because I dont have the time to waste in banging my head against a brick wall (which is no doubt what Im doing now)!

For anyone interested in the full picture, this is taken from the OP's profile information, all this in a 70g tank:

2 x Blood red parrots
1 x Normal parrot
1 x Golden severum
2 x Red Spotted Severum's
2 x Jack Dempsey's ( 1 Pair )
3 x Silver sharks
2 x Plated catfish ( not sure of real name )
1 x large Red spotted wild green severum
1 x large Common plec
1 x Golden nugget plec L018
1 x Rusty/bronze plec
4 x other various little catfish

and he's currently advertising for another female sev so he can get them to bred!!!!

I stand by my initial statement, re-home the fish, 120g even will not be large enough to house all those fish, for the longterm health and happiness, do the right thing.
