Hi guys,

I recently bought some guppies from my LFS (two males and 4 females) and they have been fine for a week, but this morning I found that one of the females had died for some unknown reason. The other guppies are fine apart from one female who seems to have developed a red spot on her top. I'm not sure if this is from the males chasing her or something else, but I've taken piccys so hopefully someone can help me work out what it is.

Any advice/assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Snowmeow,

A possible bacterial infection perhaps. It wouldn't do anyharm to put her in a separate hospital tank, of water container (with filter and heater) and dose with anti-bacterial meds accordingly. Make sure there's plenty of surface agitation for her.

Hi Manxjason,

Thanks for getting back to me. I think you were right and it was a bacterial infection, but it seems to have cleared up since. Yesterday I decided to do a partial water change of about 20% as I had not done one since getting my new fish around a week ago. Anyway, this morning it looks like the red spot has cleared up. Its lightened to flesh coloured now so I think that did the trick. I also noticed that since the water change they no longer spend all the time at the top of the tank and they now move about the tank more freely which is good.

Great. If they're staying towards the top of the water, try and add some more surface agitation to oxygenate the water. Alternatively, an airstone :)
