Darker substrates help the fish stand out more, but for fry its a pain as they're grey when born so you can hardly see them. Other fish are do-able, but you will want something that is robust enough to deal with any attacks from protective fish. I am going to try Lemon Tetra's with my Cutteri that are from the same/similar family. Columbian red fins would work too.
