Hello all I have a new tank that has been through a fishless cycle details in my signature for what I got as far as lighting is concerned sand substrate with a proper aquarium substrate below that.

Problem is I got 2 red plants and the top leaves are going green (sorry I do not know there name) I am interested in what is going on ? and how to rectify the cause.

With all the study into fishless cycling , water balance and compatibility of a community tank I have as of yet not had a lot of time to read up on the whole living plants in an aquarium subject and what to do to look after them

below is a couple of poor pictures (still learning photoing an Aquarium so much to do  ) can anyone give me some tips please ?

Oh by the way I have just ordered some reflectors for my lights :good:

Perhaps that is new growth and the leaves will age to red. I've read that in general, plants with more red need more light, but I'm sure that varies with individual species.

It is turning green because there isnt enough light.

Had a nasty feeling that may of been the case as there is 12 inches of water between the top of the plant and the lamps I think I will try the reflectors see if that makes a difference otherwise I will have to up the power of the tubes

Thanks for responding aaronnorth :good:

remember having more light may need CO2 and more nutrients.

I wouldnt do it unless you are wanting the red.

Ah okay well the reflectors have been ordered I may hold off on pumping up the wattage and see how things go I may have to go completely green the fiancée wont be happy   oh well I will have to see one thing is for sure no Co2 not for a while anyway.

Thanks for the feed back
