Have a 6 gallon edge with a couple of Red Minor Serpae Tetras. Lost one yeaterday after he started acting funny. Now this morning another one is acting weird and seems to have a white speck on his lower lip. Would this be ick and if it is what should I buy or treat with ? Thanks alot

Yes definately sounds like ick, unfortunately certain tetra species can easily succumb to this and you can heave a mass die-off very quickly, I advise trying to isolate any clearly infected individuals in a hospital tank if you have one and treating with whitespot/ick cure which you can get from your lfs or off the internet cheaply. (£3-£6),

Hope this helps, ed

Should I treat the existing tank after removing him or just the hospital tank ?

Don't move fish with ich into a hospital tank (sorry, Siilent). Only part of the ich parasite's lifecycle is on the fish; the rest of it is either loose in the water, or encysted in the substrate, so you need to treat the whole tank.

Be aware that some strains of ich are resistant to some meds, so you if you don't have success with the first one, don't blame the med as being 'useless', just move onto another one.

Having said that, one spot on the lip doesn't necessarily mean your fish has ich. Ich will not kill otherwise healthy fish, so wait a day or two before you stated medicating to make sure that it is ich and not something else.

Thank you so much. I may just be paranoid. Now that I look closer it may just be the white shade on their lips that look like a spot. I'll hang loose and see how he acts today. Just suspicious as to having just lost one yesterday. He was acting a little listless but not critical - until I returned home a few hours later when I found him dead. I took him out and did a full water change. My tests are great and my tank is around 79-80 degrees.
