Red Gills. What Could It Be?

I bought 6 new guppies about 10 days ago, 2 males and 4 females. 1 of the males died a couple of days later. The others have been fine but now 2 of them have got very red gills. Incidentally they are both (suspected) pregnant.

I'm pretty sure it's not ammonia poisoning as my levels are 0 and they don't have any of the other symptoms.

Is there anything else that could be causing this?

P.S Just looked again and one of my Gouramis also has pinkish gills

Whats your nitrite reading? what testing kit are you using?

Nitrite is also 0. All levels are correct and I did a 20% change on Monday. I'm using an API for ammonia and a tetratest for nitrite. Both reliable liquid tests.

I had a similar problem, and then realised I sprayed deodorant near the tank, could this have happened to you? Also it could be lack of O2. Maybe just increase the surface agitation slightly

i doubt deodorant will do much, if anything the fish wont sweat up when they hit the gym ;D

Anything sprayed in the air - deodorants/hairspray/air freshers etc have a risk of getting into the tank and causing harm to fishies,especially if you haven't a sealed hood or have an airpump running which is drawing the 'fresh air' into it.

The chemicals in aeresols can harm/kill fish.

How are they? if the gills are still looking red,do another w/c...

Hi - are there any other symptoms apart from the red gills? Are they clamping fins or looking lethargic? Are they swimming/eating as normal? Do they have rapid gill movement? Any gasping at water surface? How often are you doing water changes and gravel vacs?

No deodorant or aerosol sprayed nearby. No other symptoms. All are eating, active, completely normal. I do 20% changes every week. I'm at work now (obviously working hard while posting on TFF!) so I haven't looked at since this morning but they were the same this morning.

The O2 might be an issue. there doesn't seem mto be much surface agitation but then again, no fish are gasping for air at the surface...
