I bought a Red Boxer Crab at the weekend to put into my 60 litre Jewel tank. As soon as I put him in, he found himself a nice comfy spot and other than a little scavanging, he barely moved.

I kept checking on him during the weekend and again last night. He seemed fine but didn't move unless gently provoked. I came home tonight to find what I thought was him looking very pale and I was unable to make him move. With a little investigation, I established that it was indeed dead. I took him out of the tank during this evenings water change (20% done weekly, tank is only 2 months old but showing no problems in water tests) with the intent of returning him back to the LFS as a tasty treat for his pet panther trigger fish. I continued with the water change and noticed something hiding underneath my log. I peered behind the log to find my red boxer crab very much alive!

I certainly only put one into the tank and the 'body' I took out of the tank looks extremely life like. Now my question is, would it be possible for the crab to shed its skin completely and wholely after only a few days in my tank? When I picked him at my LFS he was fairly active and playful, what would cause him to suddenly become lifeless?

I must admit, I didn't do my research before purchasing the little fellow and relied completely on the LFS's advice so any information and assistance on red boxer crabs would be greatly appreciated.

Shell-molters often go into hiding for a few days after shedding their old shell, as the fresh shell underneath is very soft, making the individual very vunerable. If your crab is healthy, you will probably find a regular cycle of when this shedding happens.

Some say its best to leave the old shell in the water for a good few days, as the crab my want to nibble on it for a calcium boost ;)
