Again I have seen these in LFS. They look great and Id be interested in setting a tank up for them
Has anyone any experience of keeping them and is there any hints or tips to keeping them
thanks
you are likely to have the Chinese Firebelly Newt. these guys are much darker than the Japanese equivalent. they grow to around 7 cm or so. a 20 ukg tank should be fine for three, however i only fill the tank 3/4 full, so that gives a water quantity of say, 15ukg. it seems to be the space they need, not the water amount.
they do however need very clean water, with only a small current, 40% water changes on a weekly basis, lots of plants are good too. they will need an area they can get out of the water, and somewhere they can be both in and out, if you see what i mean. food seems to be only fresh or frozen, bloodworm, daphnia, tubworm and the like, but, though i have yet to use them, chopped up mealworm even crickets are used by some.
one thing that is well worth looking at is the size of the gravel you use. this needs to be quite big, it seems these guys can swallow and choke on the smaller grades.
