Hi,

I'd very much appreciate suggestions on a glass cleaning tools and methods. I recently got a new tank, and I don't want to scratch the glass (who does lol). I'll need to remove a small amount of algae and egg casings.

Andy :)

As far as washing it out when it's completely empty I use a normal clean dish cloth. If you're looking for something to clean it with (also while empty) I use various Jungle products depending on what I'm trying to get off. I can't seem to find them at the moment but I believe one is called Seri-Clean.

I recently used a small square bit of a scouring flat pad from the grocery store and found it worked much better than the expensive algae scraper that I bought at the lfs. I just made sure it wasn't the kind with any sort of soap (!) and even then I rinsed it really well before using. Also I don't think you would want to use it on anything that wasn't glass cuz it would scratch. It worked much better at getting those tiny algae blobs off the glass - my tank is sparkling (even if my snails are hungry).

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. My tank is up and running, so I'm after ideas for cleaning the tank glass when I do my weekly maintenance.

Wouldn't a kitchen scouring pad scratch the glass?

Could an algae scraper scratch the glass?

Andy :)

If it IS glass then an aquarium scourer is perfect, comes in various grades.
However if you use a scourer on acrylic you'll scratch it, so absolutely make sure you buy the right product for the tank

i dont know about the rest of you, but i just go to tesco and buy a pack of six non-scratch pan scourers for like 99p and use those. for the really tough stubborn algae i use a razor blade scraper like you use to scrape paint off a window ( get mine from wilkos but anywhere that sells DIY stuff should have them)
