Hi there, I have a 54l tank with 9 cardinals and 5 croaking gouramis which has been established for just over a month now with constant readings of 0 ammonia/nitrites. Nitrates usually 5.0ppm but I'd like to add a plant just to aid with the absorption of said chemical. I have dried fern plants in there at the moment but would really like something that will fill up the mid levels of the tank, as it is the top third is just water, and I'd like something to float - any good plants to look out for?

Riccia, but its messy. Water Lettuce maybe :).

Or just plant a bit of Hornwort, it will hit the surface quick and follow the current and it will soak up the Nitrates.

Depending on your light levels:
Amazon frogbit
Duckweed (ha, good luck)
Azolla (my personal favourite).
