I am feeling really nervous at the moment.
I just brought back my new weather loach, acclimatised him properly etc and all the tank stats are fine.

But as I was acclimatising it, I noticed it would sometimes become very motionless and it’s gills would stop moving (the gills that they use when they breathe).
So then I would lightly shake the bag and he would suddenly move and start breathing again.

Now this has continued since I have put him in the tank, and I am becoming very worried about the loach.
I know they are nocturnal and he has probably had a traumatic move to a new environment. But I was not expecting him to remain completely motionless and not breathe for long periods of time.
It’s very scary and traumatising.

I have got my net and moved him two or three times when my nerves got to me, and he takes him some persuading to suddenly kick of and move again. Only to come to rest and eventually stop breathing again! At the moment his just laying there balanced on his fins right at the front of the aquarium.

Please someone reassure me this is natural behaviour or give me some constructive advice.

Thanks

First- loaches are social fish and need to be kept in groups- 3 min. When kept on their own they tend to get a bit schizoid. They also have a tendency to nap and will roll over on their sides at times when they do. Stop stressing the little guy by netting and poking him.

I was going to get him 2 little friends in a month or two when we can bring the bigger back in service and cycle it.
So he wont be alone for to long.

And yeah, im just going to leave him be and stop fretting and poking him.

Just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope he gets more active come feeding time this time tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.

Thanks for the heads up about them rolling onto their side. Im hoping his just naping at the moment and thats why he is not moving.

Thanks and be sure to check the topic tomorrow TwoTankAmin :)
