I hate it when my friends tell non fish people that we meet that i keep fish, it always leads to them asking what kind of fish and when i tell them ive got quite a few tanks and what a few of them are they look at me like im some sort of super boring nerd/madman and usually avoid talking to me again so now i just say "oh the usual stuff, guppies neons and that".

i find people(the non fish keeping public)are quite interested in piranhas for some strange reason,must be the hype and crap movies

LOL yeah, i get a similar reaction with just my 3 tanks. the way i always work around the "nerd alert" is by pointing out that its really not that much different from stamp collecting.

I get asked if I keep piranhas quite often as well... I dunno what's with the hype lol...


people like to brag, I met this guy... who knows a guy... who's father has... these very exotic fish with blue stripes that shine (neons if you don't know the answer ... But that was the description)... I laughed my arse off when I heard that

my workmates roll their eyes when i natter about it
my bf grins and nods, but he does have a favourite betta and i've trained him to feed the fish when i'm late for work...
my other friends just don't mention the word "fish" in my presence.
or "toy", because i collect toys too.
or "camera" because..well yeah
so my friends don't talk to me much heh!

people at work dont get it at all with all my tanks they say i waste my money but i dont smoke and i dont drink and i dont have a gf what else am i going to spend my money on

one bloke at work got a small fishtank around 15 gallons asked me what to gewt i told him no silver sharks no sailfin plecs as they grow huge and no mollies as there brackish he got all of em fool!

people constantly take the piss coz im interested in fish but when it comes to their car or bike going wrong im the first one to find the problem so if it is something simple like brake disks or pads need changing(something simple) i just take the piss because they dont know something simple.

im not saying that they should but whats the difference between knowing info about fish and cars??

A visitor at my house mentioned how clear my water was. I now wonder what tanks have they been exposed to in the past? Looking back now, I'm wondering if they tried keeping fish and battled with a bacteria bloom?

You raise an interesting point, but perhaps some of us are "fish nerds". Doesn't mean we are general nerds that have the social skills of a peanut though!

There's a nerd of some sort in everyone, waiting to get out..

I agree. I think our "nerd genes" are exposed when you have a passion for something.

being 15 i am not expected to be into 'nerdy' stuff really lol, but i enjoy it, so i dont give a toss.... also go fishing and bowling and they are classed as 'boring' etc, but its my life... Get asked a lot oh god how old are they and they are amazied when i say 'oh only a year' there used to goldfish dieing in a few weeks...

But makes me laugh, i get the p*** taken out of me, but when they come round they are engrossed by the tanks and stare at them for hours

Slightly annoying when you find other people with tanks who clearly don't know a great deal... Round someones house, 2ft with a comet, a common, a weather loach and an ACF. With a Fluval 2+ and water level about 4" from the top. Hrm. Or indeed, the whole 'ooh, look, Nemo!' deal...

Yeah most people think I'm weird for having so many fish, but then again many people like to admire my puffer and every time i see my friends younger brother he always asks how hes doing lol .
