You might try to fit a sample of that gravel somewhere in your water flow path. The idea is to expose the new media to the bacteria that are growing on the old media. If you half bury a sponge, it may or may not get any flow through it to help transfer bacteria.

Piece of timber I mentioned.. all soaked and clean.
It looks like rock but its partially petrified. Photo doesn't do it justice (terrible phone camera) but hoping some java moss will take to it and become centerpiece of tank.

container under it is creek gravel.. pondering using it around the base of the timber for effect
