MEW MEW: yes that is 100% a true SAE. congrats on getting the right one. the false's dont eat much algae at all. personally, i try to buy quite young FF's because as they age they get lazy and wont eat as much algae, instead they develop a fetish for expensive mosses!

these guys are about 12cm long, the were handed in at work because they got too big for the tank, i think theyve been with him for a while =] so are very used to each other I just hope it stays like that!

ahh the board does that all the time tis weird!

i would be very suprised if they got on now they are that size, mine were great until about 3 inches then it was constant chasing.... if i remember right they are from the same familly as the RTBS and are not recommended to be in a tank with these or false SAE or flying foxes as they will chase each other

what size tank are they in now? they can get to 6 inches when fully grown....

they follow each other around and hang out together, they were doing that in the little tank in the store, ill see how they get on, its a very havily planted 35g tank ith bits of bogwood in there, theres nothing that couldnt handle itself, if things turn for the worse ill take one back, only cost me £1.25 each

I have two of them, exactly the same. Mine both get along famously although in a 90g tank Dont touch any algae mind you, but they are 4" and as they grow apparently they dont eat much algae, but feed ravenously on other food put in the tank for the other fish.

Yep definitely SAE's. You can tell by the mostly transparent fins and that the black stripe runs the whole length of the fish and is jagged rather than smooth.
I have one and he is amazing. I agree with the previous advice that you should provide them with something horizontal to rest on. Mine likes to chillax on the leaves of my amazon sword.
They are excellent fish, congrats for getting them so cheap, its a great price!

Whereas proper Flying Foxes are loners. Put two together and they usually fight.

but only in large groups. SAE's are well known to chase each other if kept in small numbers, i had 3 and the smallest just kept getting chased until i found it dead.... then the remaining 2 just were at each other 80% of the time but the other 20% they were best mates it got to the stage where all i could see in my tank was 2 SAE shooting all over the tank like nutters! never harming each other but the smaller one was getting very stressed and shot off as soon as the other came anywhere near... i sold 1 and the remaining one is now much more relaxed and doesnt bother anything in the tank the same goes for the rehomed SAE as i sold it to walkers101 off here and he says its fine with his fish.
the same applies for false SAE, flying foxes, rtbs etc etc all the same family the 3 i had were all inseperable and swam around together in a close group until they reached a certain size and all hell broke out.....

mewmew, on the poll when you say real flying foxes do you mean flying foxes or SAE? sorry to ask but the poll has gone ahead on flying foxes and these are clearly SAE.......

i agree, they either need to be kept singly or in groups of at least 5. the 5 that i have are fine with each other, and school really well, on of the best schooling fish i've seen. the 2 males circle each other occasionally, but they never really fight, and the females are fine together.

I nulled because i don't know. But im interesting in getting a flying fox soon, no one has them yet due to the recent restrictions on uk airspace.
