Real Flying Foxes?

well no not ACTUAL flying foxes lol but the fishy variety

i read that they are sometimes confused with a similar species so im just wondering if they are true flying foxes?

They are very socialble and love each others company

hi mewmew. i can't see a gold stripe directly above the black stripe, if there is one thats not showing up on photo, then its a ff, but if not could be an oto. or if the fins are spotty, a spotted headstander. pretty whatever, also is the mouth on the underside.... cant see in photo, if it is its an oto, if mouth in non sucker position, could be flying fox....sorry, they do look very similar

as i had a false and its had a diferrent shape mouth and body abit

looks like a FF to me, the top stripe is to light to be a SAE, deffo not an oto!

they do have a bit of a lighter stripe above the darker one if that helps? but its not terribley prominant,they may just be a little stressed theyve only just gone into the tank

MEW MEW: yes that is 100% a true SAE. congrats on getting the right one. the false's dont eat much algae at all. personally, i try to buy quite young FF's because as they age they get lazy and wont eat as much algae, instead they develop a fetish for expensive mosses!

how many pairs of barbels do they have?

if its 1 pair then they are SAE'S if 2 pairs them flying foxes

also ff's have more red in the fins.

they look identical to my SAE from the pics and mine are very golden on top....

mine got very territorial with each other when they got bigger so i would advise to get 1 or 2 more or lose one..... they grow very fast and mine hit 4 inches within a couple of months!
i had to sell 1 as the constant chasing was doing my head in.... they dont hurt each other physically just stress each other out..

can also be sold as siamese flying foxes for some reason!

agreed, i had 2 and they chased each other one, so i got two more. still get lost in my 4x2x2 though!!

mine also grew pretty fast. !!

make sure yours are all the same size, even if one is slightly bigger you will get constant chasing!

oh and make sure there is something horizontal in your tank for them to lay on. just off the floor but still in some cover so they are not exposed. they love playing in the flow but at times they chill out and lay down in the calmer water....

if you look in my sig, you can see the redmoor... they loved that for relaxing on, and they constantly go up and down cleaning it.

i agree definitely SAE's. they cleared up my algae problem within a few days. i'm wondering if mine might breed, as the two males are showing a lot of interest in the three females. however, be warned, they have a fetish for moss!!!

BTW LilyRose Tank, the pic that you put on is of a SAE, not a flying fox.
