Re-Starting Tank

I moved about a month ago and stored my filter media in a bucket of tank water and dropped a fair amount of food in. I covered the bucket and punched a bunch of holes in the top for air. I opened the bucket yesterday and the water smelled pretty rank. Is this a good sign or bad? I was planning on dumping this water into the tank and add to fill but I'm not sure if that is a good idea. I don't want to foul up the tank. Any ideas? Thanks.
