I have a 10 gallon tank that has a 5 inch african ciclid that has a taste for wardley shrimp pellets and a 3 inch african ciclid and a big fat 5 inch cat fish of some sort that also loves Wardley shrimp pellets. Anyways all 3 of them just get in a fight every time I enter the room as to who gets to hide in the little castle in the middle of the aquarium (the 5inch ciclid always wins this battle). Also I want to get rid of all three of them somehow so I can make the 10g a tiger barb community tank with a good strong filter. Was thinking about just calling all the LFS's and seeing if they would take my big fat ciclid's or my big fat catfish but I doubt they will. I dun wana have to do what I think ima have to do but I will if I must, wait no i could never do that to them, oh well maybe the lfs's will take them or i can let them loose in my pond and see how they fare :*) . Also how many tiger barbs can go in a 10 gallon aquarium if it's a Tiger-Barb Only Aquarium????

IMO, a 10 gallon is too small for tiger barbs, as they get quite big and you need at least 6 to keep the aggression levels low.

I agree, but it's also way to small for the fish in there currently. :/

Well guys lmao i know that the fish I have in there currently are way to big for a 10 gal but omg cmon tiger barbs would be fine in a 10 gallon. Now how many do you think would be good for starters?

I have tiger barbs right now in my 25 gal. I only have three at the moment because I have other fish in there but really love the new albino tiger barbs that are out now. They are a pale orange with white stripes and darker orange on their fins and nose. Very striking. But....when I looked around the corner at the LFS and seen a tank with these same barbs which by the way get to the same size as you regular tiger barbs I just about fell over. They are huge....

Apparently the 6 of them came from a person whom had a 10 gal tank and they were all fighting constantly once they grew up.

So in my opinion a 10 gal is way to small for tiger barbs, I would put 6-8 of them in my 25 gal but no more. My little regular tiger has doubled in size in 1 month. Very pretty fish but can you get a bigger tank?

If I were you with your 10 gal I would get a nice school of black neon tetras and the regular red/blue neons along with a couple of panda cory cats and some nice live plants. What a beautiful tank that would be ;)

good luck to you...bugsy

You could have a max of 2-3 in there... but remember they are an active fish and it wouldn't be enough room for them to swim. Also they will be nipping each others fins to shreds.

If you look in the members aquarium pictures I'm sure that you will find some terrific ideas of what to do with a ten gal tank, tiger barbs just isn't one of them. There simply isn't enough room for them to interact and grow. You are right about the fish that you currently have in there though, they've got to move on and I think that your idea to check with the lfs first is a sound one.
Best of luck to you but really, if you are truly asking, your ten is too small for tigers as well...

Spoken like a true cheese specialist.

I was about to say that I agree!! You know me too well. Tiger barbs IME like to swim and chase about a fair bit and a 10gallon does not give them the space to do that.

:)

I must say I love my 10 gal. I have 5 assorted tetras and a sword tail. They all get along great and its fun to watch Tetras zip around the tank. I also have a couple rocks and 4 live plants that are doing fairly well. This was my first tank and I am very pleased with the results. But for a small tank my LFS said tetras would work well and I just picked a nice assortment.

Well ok maybe ill just get a bunch of snails and some cory's and lots and lots of blue neons with mass plants...

Don't put snails in unless you are wanting to have a population explosion. They are hard to get rid of once you have them. Using stuff like "snail away" etc to kill the snails also killed alot of my fish.

Alot of times when putting in live plants there is snails on them. But live plants are the way to go in my opinion. But don't purposley add snails to your aquarium, if they show up then that is fine.

I don't know if I mentioned another beautiful dispaly is a tank of harlequins, just straight harlequins, live plants and cory cats. Now that is alos a very nive display.

I don't like aggression in my tanks so this is why I am saying that the tiger barbs are not meant for a 10 gal. Maybe you could get a bigger tank oneday and devote it to tiger barbs soley :)

good luck and keep us posted....bugsy

i dunno, maybe i could just get a bunch of live plants with some crabs and crawfish?
