Hi, i have kept a lot of fish when i was younger, but decommissioned them when i went to uni...7years later...i have the opportunity to start again! :)

i kept 2 of my old tanks, so i have a 4ft tank with an Eheim external filter (and some marine equipment like a protein skimmer etc) and a 3ft tropiquarium 88.

i am thinking of keeping discus in my 4ft tank, as i know my dad likes these (and it should help sell the idea to him to help me!) also i am thinking of adding a plumbing system to tap water out and in when i want...does anyone else have a quick system setup like this? I want to avoid carrying buckets around all the time this time! lol

my question is if i have discus in the 4ft and i could find a way to change the water easily, is it better to keep with other fish, does it help them feel secure? or could it cause problems such as fighting etc. i dont think i would have the ability to breed them, but am open to it if they begun to! what are the best fish to keep happily with them?

i will also set up the 3ft tank in my bedroom, with probably neons, angelfish - are angelfish eash to breed? which other fish are good in this setup? Could i setup 2 similar tanks and similar fish so that for example i could move them from my 3ft to the 4ft Discus tank when they have grown a bit? any ideas of which fish i could breed easily in my 3ft tank?

any and all ideas are welcome!! :)

thanks everyone!

Hi, welcome to TFF! The only thing I can help with is the water changer which I plan to make myself next month too. The ones you can buy are called "The Python" but I think there are instructions on how to build your own in the Hardware/DIY section further down the main page. All you need are some hosepipe, conectors and plastic taps. I'll try and find the post and put a link for it for you.

Ok so it wasn't this forum it was on but here's the DIY water changer.

hi, THanks fish craz, thats very helpful, i'll look into that. luckily the wall my tank will be against is the other wide of my boiler. my dad does dentral heating for a job, so hopefully i could put a pipe through the wall to the waste and also to the shower which is nearby, that way i could keep the temporary hose p the back of the tank out of sight and just pul it through a metre when i need it. :)
