so I finally got some new rasboras to go with the 2 I had (they were getting lonely.) there are now 5.I believe they are harlequin rasboras, they look like this:

they started schooling right away, but one stays at the bottom in one spot, should I just give him time? is he just scared, or is something wrong? also, how do you tell whether they are male or female?

thanks in advance

I'd give it some time (strange though). Females are more chubby than males. One in front is a male and behind a female to me.

Could be that he is scared, they find security in larger numbers. He may also have had a more difficult time than the others to acclimate.

As always when adding new fish there is the risk of them bringing a disease with them, so you'll want to keep an eye out for symptoms like flashing, not eating, stringy white poop.

he is doing fine now, it just took him a couple hours I guess. thanks for the help, though

Most Harlies are pretty shy at first just give them time.

I always find it hard/impossible to sex them so could be totally wrong here but I agree with what Dutch said.
If you look at the black triangle markings on them then the virtical line on your fish in front looks straight and more defined which would suggest it being Male whereas on the fish behind the vertical line is much more curved suggesting it is female.

I do not think male to female ratios matter at all with Harlies anyways, they all school happily so unless you specifically want to breed them I wouldn't worry too much about their gender
