I love um know many people think they are ugly and dull....

Hi Dangerousdan, lovely fish. is that a silver dollar in the first pic. i knew they were from the same family but didn't realise they could be kept together.

their the cute kind of ugly. nice pics.

Any sign of spawning yet Dan? I see they are displaying their breeding colours but they look a bit young to be trying that sort of thing yet.

Jimboo whether pirahnas will accept tankmates is very hit and miss, some people can keep all sorts of fish with their pirahnas and never have a problem, others cant add anything unless it is intended as food. The major thing to remember is that pirahnas feed off the sick and dying, if any fish in their tank, even another pirahna shows a moments weekness then its all over :X

 Its a PYGOPRISTIS DENTICULATA which is similar in size to silver dollar but has large teeth :D

Not as large as RBPs but seems to hold his own and cleverly knows how and when to mix it up with them. So far (touch wood) hes the only one of the 6 Ps in the tank not to have lumps out of his fins or flesh

Very nice fish really. Honest.

EDIT: I have shoal of around 30Neon tetras in with these and they al swim in and out of the Ps even when feeding, eating the small parts that the Ps spit out.
Never seen any get eaten or chased by the Ps.
Also 3 large common plecs are in the tank also.
Like CFC says very hit and miss. I know of one bloke who keeped one Datnoid in with his shoal of 7-8 RBPs with no problems. Others that have grown from young with community fish and never eaten anyof the tank mates. Then you'll hear of RBP that will not tolarate other RBPs without have a chunk out of them.

CFC:-
No i think these are just coming up to a year old from information ive been given so i would think signs of aggression and interaction to not really start till summer now. Hope not anyway as i wont have second fish hut sorted till then so will have no tank to use as hospital or raising tank etc.
Fear not though, i will of coarse keep you all posted if and when spawning takes place. :)

Hi i've just noticed your in clacton, thats well close to me!

Where did you get your long toothed from? I've only ever seen the red bellies in lfs round here

Also have you ever tried feeding yours raw chicken coz we tried ours on some the other night and they nibbled, spat it out and left it!

I actually got sold him as a "wild" red belly, he was around 2" max in size and i paid £12 for it i think it was.
So it was alot even for wild red, but luckly its turned out to be this much rarer Piranha :hyper:

No i try to stick to givin mine fish based foods. I know they eat birds when food is very scarse but i think you would have to stave them for aweek for them to eat it in a tank. As they get feed regular, where as in wild it might be only meal they get for few weeks.

I didn't think piranha's bred in captivity unless they were in a large shoal and a huge, heavily planted tank with acidic water?
This is just what i've read in books so correct me if i'm wrong!

Well im not planning on breeding them, it will be a case of if they do then they do. I know someone in clacton thats got about 12 thrown in a rio 300 and left them to it, occasion meal 2-3times aweek, and they have breed.
Think its just a case of, if the Ps are happy and feel like it, then they will :S

thats the funniest thing i've heard all week.

the tank in my sig has one angel fish among other community fish. i added 22 neon tetras a while back and i was down to 1 in 2 days.

who said piranha's were aggressive - watch out for the deadly angel fish

Thats cool!

I'd love it if ours bred but our waters quite hard and alkaline so i don't think theres much chance of that : (
