Would it be ok to keep 2 blue rams with 2 blue acaras or do you think the little rams will get picked on? This would be in a 55 gal tank with lots ok hide outs.

I love those fish I also love keyhole cichlids would they be better with the acara?

the acara's shouldn't pick on them, they are totally peacefull, technically they can be kept in a community tank if it is big enough.

on paper they are peacful but i had an evil blue acara not too long ago that absolutly torchured my jack dempsey so i would say as per usual depends on the fishes individual personality but if you get the acaras roughly the same size as the rams or i reccommend keyholes they grow a little larger and can hold their own a bit better than rams if you get them all the same size then i dont see why their should be any problems

my acara ignores my bolivian rams. acaras can get aggressive when spawning though, mine did.

also my acara is probably about 3 times larger then the rams

I would stick to 1 Acara and 2 Rams, in a dense tank this can work although as said it depends on the acara.

I had rams awile back and I saw some the other day at the store they were so cute. But the blue acara is the fish I can't wait to have. If I can keep the 2 together I will be so happy. Are the acaras more fun and happiest with a friend? I realy would love to get a breeding pair but I'm haveing a hard enough time finding just one of these guys for some reason.

my acara shows slight aggression towards by two rams and the acara is by itself so its not breeding.

I realy would love to get a breeding pair

If you add a breeding pair to a 55G then the only tankmates would be catfish and possibly a few dithers

I would love to breed them but I don't think I will find a breeding pair so it's more a dream and maybe down the road I will get lucky.

Do the acaras like having other acaras around or could they careless?

on ebay you can get blue acaras in groups of 6 for £10 plus postage, they are about 1-2 inch long, if you did this you would stand a good chance of getting at least one pair out of it, they you can get sell the others and keep the ones you want when they get big

I always keep my cichlids singularly, (unless they are dwarves, in which case you should keep them in pairs or trios)
In groups, if they pair up they show extra aggression and if they don't you get battles for dominance in the tank so either way aggression is increased,
They also tend to show more personality/character if kept alone

Thank you that is the answer I was looking for. So for now one acara it is.

Ok one more question what if I leave the rams for my 36 gal. So my new stocking idea is this.

55 gal lots of bogwood live plants and rock caves. Sand bottom.

8 red eye tetras
4 cory cats
1 rubber pleco
1 blue acara
1 firemouth

What do you think will it work. Not too many fish right?

looks good, although I'd be tempted to up the numbers of red-eyes to 12 and corys to 6
