I just had to euthanise my 4 yr old red VT boy Jeremiah. About a month ago he started losing colour and getting less active but still eating. His tank water is always clean and warm, and he shares it (divided) with Delilah who is fine. I assumed he was just getting old.
About two weeks ago he started to really go downhill. He spent all his time on the tank bottom, darting up for air occasionally. He wouldn't eat. This week he turned almost grey, and started breathing heavily. Today I made the decision to euthanise him using clove oil. I used a third of a mL in a cup of tank water, shaking it until it dispersed and turned white. Then I netted Jerry and placed him in the solution. He went still almost instantly.
It was a terrible thing to have to do but it didn't appear to cause him pain and it ended his suffering. Hopfully I never have to do it again!
Jerry!
