I was at my local MA yesterday and discussing my planted tank and i was advised that when dosing liquid ferts with my water change to only add the amount of ferts to equal the amount of water i was actually changing. I have always added for the total tank volume in the past, now obviously if their suggestion is correct i am overdosing (and wasting money) which method is correct?

I've always dosed the total water volume of the tank. Plants use ferts to grow, and thus take them out of the water column. If you wish to maintain healthy and steady growth it is best to replenish what is lost. Not what you are adding in the new water during water change. This has always been my belief.

i think paul is referring to Estimative Index, this is a planted tank fert regime, created by Tom Barr.

have a read here...

Just for the record, you should dose the whole tank, not just the water volume removed.
