Hi there,

Just a quick question, I am going to be setting up a new tank next week and i have had the filter i will be using for it running for the last 2 months in my parents tank, along side their fully matured filter.

Will this have cycled my filter correctly, or have I done this with no real benefits?

Cheers,

Rob

If it has been running for two months, then yes, some level of helpful bacteria should have grown on it by now. I would set up the new tank, move your filter over, and then feed some ammonia into the tank and see if it gets processed. This assumes you have an ammonia source and also a test kit.

thanks for the replies, I know about fish in and fishless cycling, ive been reading up on this forum for a while now.

once i setup my tank, i plan to essentially fishless cycle it but what I was hoping was that since it has been running for just over 2 months now already, it would already be well into the cycle and shouldnt take as long once i set it up in tank of its own.

is this correct?

Yes, it should be well on its way. Once you get it running just add some ammonia (I would recommend trying 2 ppm at first) and test it 24 hours later for ammonia/nitrites.

1. If ammonia > 0 & nitrite = 0, then your cycle is not as far along as we hoped
2. If ammonia > 0 & nitrite > 0, then your cycle is not as far along as we hoped, but farther along than #1
2. If ammonia = 0 & nitrite = 0, then your cycle is kicking butt!

sounds good, do you know what is the best ammonia source to use to add to tank? i dont want to be putting the wrong stuff in :)

In the USA, you can get Janitorial Strength Ammonia (10%) at ACE Hardware; in the UK you can order it in at Boots. (you want to find ammonia that just has ammonia and water – no additives like detergents or scents)

Be VERY careful handling the ammonia! I unintentionally got my nose near the open bottle and it BURNED.

this stuff is what ya want matey :)
