Hi all,

I just spawned my lovely betta female Coleen on 4/30/09 and she probably released close to 400+ eggs! I'm glad she ate most of them because that would have kept me busy for a while

Anyway, it is only five days later and she's completely full again!! She's fat just like she was before and looks ready to breed. I'm not feeding her too much and she's not constipated. Is it possible for her to be ready again so soon? Any info would be great, none of my other females look like she does. I guess she's got a great babymaker!! :shifty:

This is her from only moments ago. She eats the same as all my other females and you can see her only injury is her tail from her courtship with King Henry. It seems to be healing nicely!

Yes it is possible....one of my girls Kizzy always eggs up quickly especially after just spawning her.

What type of food and how much are you giving your girl and what other fish is she in with?

Besides the dozens of her own eggs she ate :S She's been recovering on live white worms, a pea, some tetra flakes (just the regular fish food flakes), and brine shrimp flakes. All of this has been in moderation (a pinch in the morning and again right before lights out) since she gets what all the other fish get; other female betta, gouramis, tetra, angelfish....

She's currently in her own section so she can't be bullied in her delicate state. She's not in visible range of any males of any sort so I didn't think she'd egg up so quickly again. It would be great if she is though!

Should I still wait two weeks to re-spawn her? I have another half-moon male who's ready...

Thanks!

I'd give her at least a couple of weeks more to recover properly from spawning before using her again. We usually leave at least 3 weeks between spawning if we want to use the female again, so she has time to fully recover. Plus if you started to condition her on high protein food now, she'd probably pop!!!

All right, sounds good :good: I'll cut back on her protein consumption and give her a couple weeks. Thanks for the advice!!

No probs :good: How are your other babies doing?

The little ones are doing well, swimming about nicely and hiding in groups of three or so in the plants. When they get a little bigger I'll get some more pictures and put them on my other thread to document their progress. I'm hoping some get their mother's crowntail genes and some of their father's coloring!

Thanks for asking! How many fry do you usually have from your spawns? How do you decide which ones to keep?

The amount you get can vary tremendously between spawns. Little Nemo and his sister are the only 2 from their spawn. Then we have our dragon spawn where we've got about 80 and my spawn with Thumbelina we have 14. You just never know how many you'll get.

It's very hard deciding on who to keep but we are working on certain lines so we try to pick the best matching males and females to continue with those lines and what we want to achieve. But then you always get the ones that just steal your heart and you have to keep them too lol

I'll keep an eye on your diary to see how your babies are growing. It always great to see other people enjoying their babies and seeing them grow up!!!

its extremely common for CT females to egg up quicky but as netty says the period between spawns should still take place.
