Please feel free to give reasons as it may help me reach a decision.

Thanks :)

Well it would depend on the size of the tank and the stocking. If it were a small tank then I wouldn't bother with an external but if it were a decent size then I'd recommend an external, for the reasons told by Tizer in the above post.

James.

defo external, you can't see a huge box then in the tank so it looks nicer. more filtration options and more space for extra media.

more space for media, better filtration, and you don't end up with an ugly box (in most cases) in your tank

In order of preference
1. Trickle / gravity fed
2. External / canni9ster
3. Internal
Leaving aside maintenance and aesthetic issues my main concern is removing the majorty of pollutants from the water

External - Less visible, generally better circulation, more scope for media, and higher volumes of media.

external
keeps the mess out of the inside of the tank and easy to maintain

11-0 so far. looks pretty conclusive?

I was always worried about getting any water leakage as it filters outside the tank? Is this ever a problem?

Thanks :)

Pahh...voted for internal filter just to be the bad guy! :hyper: :shifty:

The way I see it with an internal filter the suspended solids are washed back into the tank whenever you lower the water level or lift the filter from the tank
With an external filter the suspended solids are taken out of the tank but will build up every day so reducing the filters` efficiency (until you clean the media)
With a wet and dry trickle filter (at least the one I`m using) the majority of visible waste is washed clear of the water path and ceases to be a problem
