My albino female and black tiger male paired up and spawned twice so far, they are best friends. I also have a rather odd tinfoil that thinks hes an oscar.... does this qualify? He tries to mate with the female and everything. They are happily living in a 77 with some more fish. This should be a 125 soon enough.

They do indeed destroy plants, but they dont eat them afterwards. Fun! To ward off hexamita (hole-in-the-head), give them plenty of vitamin c, and very few feeders.

just to add my pennys worth.

i breed oscars, and if you do want to pair them up then 6 will be the minimum unless you want to run the risk of getting all males or one female that dont like the pickings. even then they wont pair up till at least 4 inchs and ive never seen them pair before they reach 5 inchs. (they can breed at 4-5 inchs) these are serious fish and can live for years, once you have them you may have trouble moving them on later. so be warned these guys are keepers.

one thing we all agree on is that you need a massive tank to breed properly but the rewards can be pretty good. i have two pairs at the moment and even after the cull i make good money.

5in? thats kind of a small oscar to be breeding? i don't know, I never experience breeding oscars so maybe you are right since you breed them, but still? are you sure they will breed at 5in?

Just to tell you I have seen a full grown oscar in a 55gal. He could bearly turn around and spent most of his time lying on the bottom of the tank vary unhappy. He latter died of hole in the head. These are huge fish that need lots of room to be happy. They are also smart, to smart to under house them.
