Hi everyone, just wanted to know if cichlids will live happily with, mollies, platys, guppies, plec and catfish?

Thanks

Cichlids range from very small to very big...if very small i.e. dwarfs such as apistogramma things should be okay, but something much larger such as Oscar, GT etc will eat some of those fish quite happily, especially the guppies!

I think you need to explain why you are asking the question...

Also if you are planning on getting a cichlid you need to consider other things such as tank size and decor etc

Angelfish are fairly peaceful as cichlids go and should be OK with mollies, platies and adult guppies and plecs. However, like most fish angels will eat any smaller fish that fits in their mouth especially tetra and yung guppies. Adult guppies should be OK unless the angels are huge.

I would have to disagree with the angels. I find the ones I have kept are really nippy! A single cichlid with slower moving fish like platys & guppies is a bit of a risk, however I have a lone platy (who I am trying to rehome) in with my Ellioti cichlids and he seems to be doing ok, however there are around 15 Ellioti and they tend to squabble amongst themselves and leave the platy alone.

I have 4 rescued angels I rehomed in my livebearers tank and they have never attacked any guppies, not even small ones, or the sole tetra, Any squabbling is restricted to themselves and it's much better now there are 4 of them. Perhaps a solitary angel my be bored and attack other fish...or more likely it depends on individual character. They are cichlids after all!

PS If you can get that sole platy to London I would gladly adopt it. I have 7 platies, both sexes so it will have lots of friends

With all cichlids they have a mind of their own. they have lots of personality. Where one person might have had a peaceful one another could have a nippy one.

There are a few dwarfs that would work. Like rams, Dwarf acaras, keyholes, Festivum, and apistogrammas. But watch out you start with dwarf cichlids and then you want more and bigger fish because they are just so much fun.
