Davy Jones was feared by pirates and sailors. Davy was the Devil of the seas. He appeared at dissasters at sea and his name Davy actually means "Devil".

Now the meaning "Davy Jones locker" was mostly used by pirates and sailors. It just means to be sent to the bottom of the ocean forever. Ships are usaully the case but if some one fell over board and drowned, they would be said to be sent to "Davy Jones Locker". The Locker is the resting place for ships and the dead at sea.
