I am wondering how fast Jack Dempseys grow. I just got two jack dempseys that are about 1in. that are in my 29 gallon tank. I am playing to get a 55 gallon tank when they get bigger. How long will it take a jack dempsey to get to about 5-6 in?

Well you'll want to move them before they get to be 5-6'' ...... they wont grow very fast in a small tank like that... probably will stunt their growth... If you put 2 1'' JDs in a 55g do weekly water changes and feed them well they should hit 5-6'' in around a year maybe? I have a JD thats about 5-6 inches and it's grown about an inch in the 3 months I've had it.

Dont put two JDs together, unless you are going to breed them or they have spawned before. They hate eachother and will fight, and this will make them both look sad and unatrractive. Its happened to me before.

JDs grow very rapidly, mine was 1.5 inches 1.5 years ago, it is now about 6. My cousins is even bigger. They seem a little more tolerant when older. The max size for a JD is 8 - 10 inches.

I am extremly happy I bought my dempsey. I bought him about hmm well just about 2 years ago now and he is one of my most beautiful fish counting my Salt water fish. He is about 7 inchs now. I bought him when he was about an inch and a half and I had him in a 20 gallon for about 8/9months. He grew to about 3 inchs in there then I moved him to my new 33gal. He grew to about 4.5inchs in there within about 6months then I put him into a 77gal and now he is about 7/7.5 inchs now. He is in there with a 9.5 inch oscar and they have completely outgrown there aggressivness and are extremly docile now. Oh and just another little tid bit, I've fed him only cichlid pellets and vegetables and sometimes beef heart. VERY VERY seldem feed them goldfish to prevent diesease. its kept him healthy his whole life and hes never even had ich.

Most cichlids grow pretty quickly in my experience. I got a very young jack demsey (probably about an inch long) last month and its already more than doubled in size. A lot depends on the water conditions and size of the tank. The bigger the tank and the more frequent the water changes the faster they will grow. Also its important to make sure that they are fed several times a day.

belive it or not I see this type of question alot. the answer is acutally water changes and quality. keeping up on water changes, providing massive filtration for the tank size ( I usually double what the manufactuer of the filter says for the tank) and a diet of cichlid pellets with both vegie matter and meat of some sort is the best diet. my JD 8-8.5 inches now gets a very wide variety of pellets, scallops, shrimp, silversides, and algae waffers.
