Question For People That Own A 50 Or 55 Gallon Tank

How much do you think it cost after you got the tank, stand, gravel, filter, and heater? I just want to know so I can figure how much it would cost if I got it new or used and if you don't mind do it seperatly so like for example heater- ? filter-? and so on.

Hi Durbkat. Ok, i can't post a pic here but I will email one to the email address that i found when i clicked on your nickname. I just got a 55 US gallon last weekend. It's pretty bare still but you'll get the idea.
For pricing here's what i paid. All prices are in Canadian dollars. Aquarium: $160, Filter (Penguin 350): $63, Heater (Rena Cal Top Light 300W): $44, Stand (DIY): $100. Gravel is $16.64 for a 22lb bag. So figure 2 bags of gravel and the total is about $400 Canadian or maybe $330 US.
Edited to add pricing info.

Wow! Siamese fighter that tank looks awesome. Fella would you mind telling how much you paid for your 45g because that looks for ideal for the space I have. If you don't mind put it something like this
Tank-$???
Filter-$???
heater-$???
gravel-$???
If you can do that, that would be very nice of you.

:*) Oops sorry i forgot to credit the original owner of this tank, this doesnt belong to me and i hope the owner is ok with me posting it here. Ill refer it when i can remember where i found it.

Edit: logan89 is the owner of this tank.

Sure no problem. We bought it piece by piece rather than all in one go, so, it was more expensive than it should have been.

Tank - £52
Filter - £25
Heater - Doesn't require one, it's a coldwater tank. If I wanted one for my 45, it would have been £20 ish
Gravel we paid over the odds for really. It's Tahitian Moon gravel, and the bag that filled that tank was about £20 if I remember rightly.

You didn't label the stand, or hood, but these were quite big financial drains.

Stand - £70. It's wooden and solid. Initially we bought a metal stand, but, I wasn't happy with it's stability, so got the new stand. The metal stand (that would be fine on a non-carpet floor) was £30.

The hood was £30. The wooden one to match the stand was £50, but I didnt think it was worth it.

The lights were something like £20 altogether, and there is also an air pump in there, which with the tubing was about £20 as well.

So all in all, a ridiculous £250+ for something which we could have got altogether for much less. A hard lesson learnt very easily. I imagine in the US you'll get it even cheaper though. HTH.

So I'm guessing that the tank was used since it was so cheap in UK dollars? Also thanks for responding.

And you got it for 52 Uk dollars? How much do you know would that be in american dollars? Because my friend said when he bought his 29 us gallon tank that after he bought the tank, wood stand, filter, heater, undergravel filter with power head on each one, and plants it ended up costing him $400 american dollars!

52 UK pounds ;)

Yeah, the actual glass tank was very cheap.

As for 400 US dollars, I reckon you'd do well to check the "craigslist" website "freecyle" website, and your local papers for tanks going cheap. If you go second hand, you can get massive savings.

I know what you mean. I will be starting to look around to see if their are tanks for sell in the newspaper and I have posted in the buy/sell/swap section of them forum looking for a 55g which I haven't got a reponse so I will be changing it to 45 gallons.

Size wise, mine is 48 x 12 x 18. For a 55 I think you can get 48 x 15 x 18. I would definitely recommend that over a 45 US gallon, it's only 3 extra inches across the back, and the price I can't imagine would be a great difference. For your common plec, he'd be very grateful for those 3 inches to turn around with.

Keep in mind that you can get the same tank second hand for at leat half or ideally a third of the price of whatever a new 55 gallon setup costs in the USA (the entire setup). Check out eBay for your aread or your local free ads papers. You might even be able to pick up something for hardly any money at all. I you have time, keep your eyes peeled and open.
