Can anyone help me with this?
I have mineral build up from using
tap water in my tank.
How can I either prevent this or
minimize it?
The build up is on the flat surfaces
of the tank and I have to scrape it
away with a razor blade because
the sponge type scraper that I use
will not clean it off.

The only way to prevent it is to use pure water. Reverse Osmosis (R/O) units will remove most of the minerals or you can collect rain water assuming it isn't polluted with industrial chemicals.
R/O units can waste a lot of water so if you are limited to water, or on water restrictions, then perhaps just live with it.

yep that sounds like the way we all deal with this problem. even using RO will not help. as you have to add all the minerals that the unit removed, back again after you filter it. PURE RO is positively bad for your fish, and the country, as it is so massively wasteful.

you can use a 50/50 mix of R/O and tap water. Or a 40/60 mix, just depends on how soft you want the new water and how hard the current water is.
