Question about frogs - for a friend

Hey all,

My friend is considering getting a frog. But he hasn't kept any type of frog before and has only had a goldfish. He has a few questions;

What type of scape do they need? Rocks/driftwood, sand or gravel?
Plastic/Silk/Live plants?
What size tank? Long/Tall or certain volume?
How many frogs could you have in X size tank?
Tropical/Cold water fogs? Is that a thing?
Are there other tank mates they can be kept with?
How often do you feed them and what food do they take?

Some frogs live in water, some live on land and breed in water.

Frogs should not be kept with fish because they can't tolerate medications used to treat fish.Frogs will also eat anything that fits in their mouth and this includes fish, shrimp, snails and smaller frogs. They will also eat insects, earthworms and most other things that move.

Tropical frogs should be fed at least once a day. Temperate frogs will eat more in warm water and less often in cool water.

Aquatic frogs that live in water all the time should have a thin layer of sand ono the bottom and some live plants.

Terrestrial frogs can have a layer of sand and some smooth rocks or wood. They should have a shallow container of dechlorinated water to drink from and sit in to hydrate.

Some male frogs are territorial but most females will live together. You can keep a male and female together and some species can be kept in groups of males and females. However, it's not easy to sex my frogs.

Frogs occur in the tropics and in temperate regions around the world. The tropical frogs need warm water (20-30C) and the temperate frogs will live in water that is 5-30C.

There are two aquatic frogs commonly available - the small African dwarf frog (ADF) and the large African clawed frog (ACF).

ADFs are best kept alone.
They are almost blind and find their food by smell. If there are fish in the tank, they will have eaten the food by the time the frogs find where it was.
Fish have been known to pick at frogs and frogs have been know to mistake fish for food.
Frogs are intolerant of fish medication. Sick fish cannot be treated in a tank containing frogs.


Food - specialist frog food with bloodworms as a treat. I don't know what's available in NZ but the recommended foods in other countries are ZooMed frog and tadpole food and HBH frog & tadpole bites.
