Hello, I am just wondering if you need to connect an air stone to a pump thing... Or if you could just drop one in your aquarium? Surely it couldn't do much harm if it was just dropped in? I guess it would slowly dissolve and give off air?

Any one know this?

Thank

It won't do much at all if you just drop it in. If you want it to produce a column of bubbles you need an air pump.

I know it wouldn't give a column of bubbles, but would it help with the oxygen level in the tank?

Do you mean just dropping an air stone into the tank? Or running the air pump without an air stone?

dropping an airstone in a tank will not give you any oxygen what so ever - - it will sit in there and be as functional as a rock.

the airstone is made to be attached to an airline attached to air pump - - the airstone breaks up the stream of air in to multiple bubbles instead of just single large bubbles. that is the only function of an airstone

It really wouldn't have no benefit at all. An air stone is just a porous stone that let's air through it once its connected to tubing and a pump. The pump forces air through it. There's no real need for an air pump apart from the visual effect for the fish keeper. Anything that breaks the surface water let's oxygen into the tank. If you turn your filter outleft towards the surface of the water this should cause the water to break up and this will do the job you want
